“Valparaiso: The City of Absurd Truths”
Valparaiso is like an Ionesco play: Absurdist and absolutely True.
Look through a gateway and see the Pacific. Look through a gateway and see a brick wall.
A “Calle sin Salida” is a street to another world, not a dead end.
Color is extravagant and space is precious.
Discover a stairway. Climb 100 steps. The rhythms of stair steps are irregular. Count your steps. Watch your step. And look up! Climbing down is more difficult than climbing up.
Valparaiso is a Theater.
The performance is en titled: “daily life.”
Cuida tu paso y mira hacia arriba. Bajar es más difícil que subir.
Valparaíso es un teatro.
El espectáculo se titula “ la vida cotidiana”
The portraits and landscapes are both examples of a printmaking technique called paper lithography. It is a process that uses xerox copies with gum Arabic to produce lithographic images. Several of the landscapes also incorporate the cyanotype process, a nineteenth century photographic technique that results in images with a rich blue hue.
Additionally, stencils have been used with the landscape images.
The landscapes were created in 2022.

“The faces ( Las Caras) of Casaplan”
Casaplan is a printmaking studio.
Casaplan is a café.
Casaplan is a refuge for creativity.
“Las Caras” are people whom I have met at Casaplan. They are artists, art lovers, café friends, and baristas.
Each of them “purchased” one collage from my last exhibition in the Casaplan gallery. The “payment” (lo Pago) for their collage was a photograph of themselves, that I made.
The portraits in this exhibition are based upon those photographs. The colors, the print making marks rolled on the surface, and the textured papers all speak to the creative environment that makes Casaplan and “Las Caras” distinctive.
